Barcode number checker
Paste a complete UPC, EAN or GTIN number to check that it is well-formed.
A barcode number can look right and still be wrong. This checker confirms the number has a valid length for its type and that its check digit matches the other digits, and tells you what its GS1 prefix means. It cannot tell you who a number is assigned to - that information is not public in a form we can check.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a barcode number fail the check?
Usually a typing or copying mistake - a swapped pair of digits or a missing digit changes the check digit. Re-copy the number from the original document and check again.
Does the prefix tell me the country of origin?
No. The prefix shows which GS1 office issued the number. A product made in China can carry a US-issued number, and the other way round.
My UPC has 12 digits but the EAN has 13 - which is right?
Both. A 12-digit UPC-A is the same number as the 13-digit EAN-13 with a leading zero; retailers worldwide accept either form.
