Everything you would like to know about codes
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our UPC and EAN barcode numbers.
About Our Codes
Where do our codes come from and why are they cheap?
The codes themselves are not generated by us. They are originally issued by GS1, then sold to companies that do not use them, and we acquire them for resale. Please note, you will not receive a unique company prefix, but these codes are fully valid and accepted for selling your products. For most products except books.
Will these work for any product?
Our barcodes are suitable for all types of products except books and pharmaceuticals. They are fine to use with health products, including items such as protein powders.
Will these work in any country?
Absolutely, our codes will work worldwide, online and in retail.
Do the codes have a country prefix?
The prefix is simply an indication of which country the barcode originates in but is not at all a condition to sell in a country. GS1 explains "since GS1 member companies can manufacture products anywhere in the world, GS1 prefixes do not identify the country of origin for a given product." We have people using our codes with US prefix to sell in the UK in Waitrose and Debenhams for example, or products "made in France" in France. If someone say they will sell you codes with an UK prefix it will not be legit, as only US companies were once allowed to resell their codes. See also here and here.
Your Order
How many codes do I need?
You will need a separate code for each product variation (for example size, colour, or design). For instance, if you have 2 t-shirt designs, each available in 5 sizes and 2 colours, you will require 20 codes (2 × 5 × 2).
What do I get?
You will receive by email UPC-A (12 digits) codes AND EAN-13 (13 digits) codes, both are variant of the same code. Each code is accompanied by graphics of the corresponding barcode.
How are they registered?
We don't need information about your product, price or company, you use the codes to register directly your products with your distributor (e.g. Amazon, CD Baby, supermarkets, grocery stores, etc). They will link the information as well as price to the code for you.
Do I need to print the barcodes?
If you sell products online you should only need the numbers, however if you sell through a distributor instead of sending the products directly, you may need to print the barcodes on stickers, which you can do with the images we provide you with your order, or by using our printing service.
Selling on Amazon
Can I sell on Amazon?
Yes, you can sell on Amazon with our EAN or UPC codes, but there are important limitations to understand.
If the brand already exists on Amazon with its own codes, you must use the original codes for that brand.
Amazon may also ask for additional documents depending on the product category. This is normal. For this reason we provide certificate documents with your order. You can fill in the required information after purchase and include the certificate in your support case.
If you are creating variations of an existing product, all variations need to use codes with the same prefix. If your new EANs have a different prefix, Amazon will require you to create a new product instead of adding a variation.
Error 8572 | Using UPC, EAN, ISBN, ASIN or JAN codes that do not match the brand you are trying to list
Please note that you cannot use codes from another brand if that brand already has registered codes on Amazon. In that situation you must use the original codes linked to that brand. Even if you are the manufacturer, Amazon may require additional documents depending on the product, brand and category. This is exactly what our certificates are for.
When Amazon requests documentation, you can provide the GS1 style certificate included with every purchase. You can generate it after checkout by entering the required information.
To generate your certificate we need two fields from you:
1. Name of the person responsible
2. Name of the company OR brand OR seller that will use the codes (this must match exactly the brand or manufacturer name you entered on Amazon)
You can fill this in and download your certificate immediately after ordering. Amazon usually accepts these documents as long as the brand information matches.
Error 5665 | Amazon must approve your brand before you can use it to list products.
If Amazon shows error 5665, your brand name usually needs approval. This is an internal Amazon process. The fastest solution is often to use a simpler brand name that has not been registered and does not require verification. Short names of three or four letters tend to work best.
If you prefer to keep your chosen brand name, you must complete Amazon's brand approval steps. This is outside our control and not linked to the codes.
